Unstoppable Kulpreet Brar: How Tragedy Transformed Her into a Fitness Icon and Life Coach

In an enlightening conversation with Rupinder K Sandhu, we delve into the inspiring life story of Kulpreet Brar. Host Rupinder K Sandhu introduces Kulpreet, highlighting her remarkable story featured on Humans of Bombay. Kulpreet's resilience in the face of losing her parents at a young age and taking on the responsibility of her family is emphasized, painting a picture of her strength and courage.

Kulpreet's story begins with the profound bond she shared with her brother, who was ten years older than her. She fondly recalls, "He raised me like a child." This age gap bestowed upon her brother a parental role, nurturing Kulpreet with a sense of security and love, evident in their shared moments in the fields and his protective embrace.

A tragic twist in Kulpreet's life occurred with her brother's untimely death, catapulting her into a pivotal family role. Kulpreet was on the brink of marriage when this tragedy struck. She found herself questioning the significance of her planned marriage in the face of such profound loss. In December 2016, Kulpreet faced a heart-wrenching ordeal. She was working in Chandigarh when she received the devastating news of her brother's accident. The subsequent eight days in ICU she watched over her brother, clinging to hope amidst despair.

She recalls telling him reassuringly that he would recover in time for her niece's birthday. However, this glimmer of hope was short-lived as her brother's condition worsened, leading to his passing.
At the time of my brother's passing, his son was 10 years old and his daughter was 6 years old, said Kulpreet.
Despite the overwhelming grief, Kulpreet found solace in her family's support. Her nephew's encouragement, "You are my father now, Bhua Ji," was a source of immense strength for her. This support system played a crucial role in her journey of overcoming grief and taking on new responsibilities.

The Dark Days of Depression and Isolation
Battling depression and the crushing weight of societal pressure, her days were clouded with sadness. The turning point came when she realized the importance of gratitude and friendship. She recounts, "I was sitting on the bench, crying all day." This emotional turmoil was compounded by her roommates' lack of understanding, leading them to complain about her to the warden.

During Kulpreet's challenging times, her family’s attachment and expectations intensified. She faced the daunting task of proving herself to her relatives, especially during weddings where cooperation was scarce. Kulpreet reflects, “You have to prove to people at one point.” This was a crucial stage in her life where she learned the importance of standing up for herself. Kulpreet's story took a dramatic turn when she realized the need to take charge of her life. "I stood up for myself," she declares, marking a significant shift in her journey.

In an environment where dependency was the norm, Kulpreet’s resolve to be self-reliant was revolutionary. She realized the importance of financial independence and self-care. “I felt like I had to earn money, I had to stand up,” she recalls.

The Challenge of Parenthood and Financial Independence
Kulpreet's resilience was further tested as she navigated the challenges of single parenthood and financial stability. Her brother's business, along with her HR job, became her primary source of income. She faced the complexities of managing finances and raising her brother's children single-handedly. The aftermath of her brother's accident brought legal and societal challenges. Kulpreet had to contend with a reopened case and societal judgments about her decision to prioritize her family over marriage. She stood firm in her choices, focusing on her children's education and well-being. Kulpreet's journey is marked by her role as a mother and a decision-maker.

She emphasizes the importance of being financially independent and making informed decisions for her family. She admits, "I tease my children. I will say, we got married, I will get it done at your expense." This sentiment reflects her deep commitment to her family's well-being, prioritizing their needs above all else.

Passion for Fitness: A Lifeline
Kulpreet's dedication to fitness is not just a hobby; it's a lifeline. Rising at 5:30 am for her fitness routine, she emphasizes the importance of self-care, especially for women. She believes in breaking oneself to rebuild stronger, a philosophy that resonates deeply with her life's challenges. Kulpreet juggles multiple roles with grace. She manages household responsibilities, her brother's children's education, and her fitness regime with admirable efficiency. Her routine is a blend of discipline and self-care, embodying her belief that fitness is integral to mental and physical well-being.

Kulpreet candidly shares her struggles with depression, particularly following her brother's demise. Finding solace in running and fitness, she transformed her grief into strength. Her journey highlights the therapeutic power of physical activity in healing and coping with life's hardest blows. The support from her running community played a crucial role in her recovery and growth. These connections, formed through shared passions, became her extended family, offering support and motivation.

Reflections on Marriage, Independence, and Decision-Making
Kulpreet's views on marriage and independence are thought-provoking. She believes in the power of decision-making, irrespective of marital status. Her experiences have taught her the importance of being mentally strong and opinionated, qualities she values in herself and others. Her belief that "ਵਿਆਹ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਸੀ" (For me, my family was more important than marriage) reflects her deep-rooted values.
